<dcterms:description><![CDATA[A single-sheet typed letter addressed to Mrs. Caroline Julia Ogrodnik from the Commanding Officer of the Witter regarding Francis's death. Lieutenant George Herrmann III reports that he notified the Navy of Francis's death; relays his and the crewmen's sympathies; and apologizes for not being able to share more information due to military restrictions. The letter is signed, and an address is written on the back in pencil, but there is no accompanying envelope. There are holes and a rust mark from a staple in the upper left corner, but whatever was attached is no longer with the letter. Several of the periods within the text are punched through the paper.]]></dcterms:description>
