Born in Boston, Mas._Son of John Sullivan_By occupation a Laborer_Single_at the age of 18 years, on 2nd {Mar} 1861, enlisted for 3 years in the 31st Reg. Massachusetts Vol. Infantry, and was assigned to Company “E”_Mustered on 10th Dec, 1861,_Rank Private with no subsequent changes.<br />
Participated with his Reg. in operations under Battle of New Orleans, and, subsequently, in the Teche campaign, Ft. Hudson and Red River campaigns and siege of Mobile.<br />
23rd July, 1864, he reenlisted for 3 years, and received the prescribed furlough of 30 days with the veterans of his Regiment in the {relm} of {Sabine} Crop Roads, La., was slightly wounded in left hand, though not incapacitated for duty.  Was sick with {aqua} and confined in hospital at Baton Rouge for three (3) weeks.  Excepting this absence was was constantly on duty with his Reg.  Sullivan is reported to have been a good soldier, faithful to duty.<br />
Discharged at {Galloupes} Island, Boston Harbor, by reason of discharge of his Reg., Octo 9, 1865.<br />
Subsequently returned to his home in Chicopee Falls.<br />
