And performed provost guard duty there._The next day after Thanksgiving, November 29th, 1861, he was thrown from his horse and received a severe injury in his side. Taken to the hospital at Annapolis, and afterwards to the Headquarters of the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Dischargers, January 16th, 1862, on account of physical disability. Re-enlisted at Pittsfield, Mass. For three years in that 31st Regiment of Infantry, Mass. Vols._Company F_He accompanied the regiment to Lowell. Thence to Ship Island and New Orleans. His record is the same as that of his company given in the account of the regiment with the following exceptions: In July, 1862., he was sick in hospital two weeks. August 25,1863. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in Company B. 91st Regiment of Infantry, U.S. Colored Vols, having been previously detached from the 31th regiment in order to receive the commission. Remained at Fort Pike, La. On garrison, outpost, and scouting duty till August 16, 1864, when he was mustered out of service with severe other {supernumerary} officers._returned to Chicopee.
