Below that, the text of the column reads: "Pearl Harbor, Oct. 12--The navy announced today that six Essex class aircraft carriers will be converted to troop transports and assigned to the return of Pacific veterans for early November. Three carriers, the Bunker Hill, Hornet and Ticonderoga, will clear Pearl Harbor the 17th returning 3600 servicement to West coast ports. The Yorktown. Bon Homme Richard and Hancock are now enroute to mainland ports loaded with troops from forward areas scheduled for discharge. When converted, the carriers will have a passenger capacity in excess of 24,000. The Hornet, Bon Home [sic] Richard and Ticonderoga will return to Pearl Harobr [sic] for refitting; the Bunker Hill will put into Puget sound navy yard, Bremerton, Wash.; the Yorktown will be converted at Hunter's Point and the Hancock at Terminal Island in San Fransisco bay. Of 185,796 navy veterans returned to mainland ports from Pacific stations during September, some 40,000 have been demobilized, the navy says."
