Horse-Hitching Pine

Title

Horse-Hitching Pine

Subject

Description

A photograph of a wooded area with a sign with Japanese characters written on it to the left of the image. There are posts with a chain connecting them as a fence in the foreground in front of the sign. Most of the sign is indecipherable; however, part of it translates to "Emperor Meiji." Some of the other characters seem to be telling the story of the rock seen to the left of the sign, which suggests these trees are the "horse-hitching pine" to which shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo once hitched his horse in the twelfth century and/or the story of Emperor Meiji later visiting the site.

Abstract

A photograph of a wooded area with a chain fence and sign which reads "horse-hitching pine," referring to the twelfth century shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo resting here and/or the story of Emperor Meiji later visiting the site.
